Outside the Box

Keeping focused on a goal is the number one issue I see people facing when I speak with them about their goals and challenges. I'm always examining ways to help others find their magic bullet to create laser sharp focus. For some it is a personality issue that needs to be overcome. For others, it is being overwhelmed by their goal. Still others have too many changes happening all at once that they short circuit.

What do you do to achieve success in maintaining your focus? What worked? What didn't work for you?

Hey Stacey.

Great question. What has really worked for me is to focus on my daily actions rather than who is joining my business. Too many people focus just on that and they beat themselves up!!

I actually just did a little video on that

Maybe this will help a few people :)

Excellent question Stacey! So much so that I featured you and your question on my blog:

How Do You Maintain Focus?

Hello Stacey

You certainly got me focussed trying to give a meaningful reply! I'm 60 years old and retired with no real need to set goals. After all I have an income which is not affected by the current difficult economic climate.
It is not true however, because not needing to focus is my worst nightmare come true. Being open to the events of each day however trivial simply stalls me and I lose my ability to actually enjoy myself. Perhaps this exposes a condition which needs attention or, more relevantly, I need to focus on something.
When I look back, I remember achieving professional goals because I purposely became oblivious to other parts of my life, simply focussing on a single goal. Has this method ultimately destroyed my ability to live happily in retirement or does it mean that we all need to focus on some goal for the rest of our lives however small that goal maybe?
I live alone so this may colour my views. It was a goal I never knew I had, to live alone,I was married at the age of 22 yet in my heart I know that I gradually worked towards my current lifestyle subconciously. Everyone, my wife children family and friends saw it happening, but not me. They all still love me so I must focus in being happy for their sakes?

Some of us are happiest with always having a goal to achieve. The journey to our goal is just as important, if not more so, as attaining it. Once achieved, we look for a new goal.

I would be surprised if you are indeed sitting without new goals. Yes, you may not be focusing on career and finance goals. However, there are six other areas in which to focus. It sounds as if you are moving towards those.

Would you please elaborate this question?

"They all still love me so I must focus in being happy for their sakes?"

I appreciate your comments!

Stacey:

The challenge to maintain 'FOCUS' is something I have often wrestled with these past 2.5 years as I got back into the marketing world, sometimes I would be on fire & really be able to move ahead quickly & yet other times I felt as sluggish as a snail & made little if any progress.

I believe for me what I have found that truly impacts my Focus is whether I Truly have a PASSION for what I am doing. If I have a True PASSION from my heart I tend to keep focusing on my goal & moving forward even when the going gets tough, if it is not a true Passion but only an emotional reaction of the moment it dies & I do not proceed with success. As one of my Mentors stated "The measure of a Man/Womans DESIRE(Passion) is the Pursuit". The Pursuit of a DESIRE brings back memories of my college days when I First laid eyes on my wife...I was truly mesmerised & found creative ways to meet her, get to know her & (YES) get her to like me (even when at 1st she wanted nothing to do with me)...My Passion grew so strongly I was able to maintain my FOCUS & eventually we were married(It was 30yrs. BTW in October).

In closing I would like to record Napoleon Hill's words from his great book 'Think & Grow Rich" that I believe will help one become more 'FOCUSED'.

"Six Steps To Turn Desire Into Reality"

1.) Fix in your mind the EXACTLY what you DESIRE! (BE DEFINITE & SPECIFIC)

2.) Determine Specifically the PRICE you will pay
(what you will do) to get Your DESIRE.

3.) Establish a DEFINITE DATE as to when you will
be in possession of your DESIRE

4.) CREATE a DEFINITE PLAN for carrying out your
desires & begin at once , whether you are
ready or not , to put this plan into action.

5.) Write out a clear & concise STATEMENT of #’s
1-4

6.) READ your statement aloud 2x daily(am/pm)
as you read---see & feel(imagine) yourself
already in possession of Your Desire.

Matt
