Outside the Box

I hear the phrase all the time saying "Become a Leader and people will follow!". Take a look at Barack Obama, a TRUE leader. Study men like Benjamin Franklin, Bill Gates, Sam Walton, or Ted Turner. How about the women? Hillary Clinton, Rosa Parks, Diane Hochman ( And if you don't know who Diane Hochman is then Google her, I DARE YOU! )

All of these people are GREAT LEADERS because they have had GREAT MENTORS. Look at Larry Brauner, he didn't create his success solely on his own. Each and every GREAT LEADER has started out as a GREAT FOLLOWER. Mark Hughes never could have started HERBALIFE without first FOLLOWING GREAT MENTORS.

Become a GREAT LEADER by listening and learning FIRST. Obama became so POWERFUL and INFLUENTIAL because he FOLLOWED the teachings of his mentor, Joe Biden. Do yourself a favor. Take your time, hang around and study people for a while on the internet. Find out who you CAN and CAN'T trust and don't fall for HYPE! Start slow and be realistic about your goals, the rest will fall into place.

And whatever you do, please don't SPAM others! Lead by example for all the people FOLLOWING you!

VERY interesting comments. I, myself, strive to be the best the Lord made me to be. What a challenge. I try to 'learn' more each day. I thank you, commenters, here today ~ as well as Obama/Biden ~ I pray for them each day as well. Their tasks are monumental! Sooooo many people are counting on them. Leadership.. I strive for that accomplishment. I pray it to be in my future too.

Jeff:

Good topic for discussion.

I would say a couple elements that are related to Being a great leader are these:

A.) Being able to point folks back to themselves,,to their own calling & Purpose so they can then begin to lead a Life of Destiny & success

B.) Also related to 'A'...my favorite Leader Jesus Christ stated more than once, that in order to be GREAT one must be the SERVANT of all. This has been a 'credo' for me ....I ask what in my business, opportunities, personal life am I CURRENTLY doing to be of service to others?, How can I Improve this?, HOW MANY Folks am I DAILY giving Increase to?

My calling back to the Marketing world began as you say Following Joe Schroeder & Diane Hochman (among others) 2.5 yrs. ago,,,,These mentors truly helped me find myself & as Joe would enabled me to "Walk 10 Foot Tall & Bulletproof!"

Jeff,

Thanks for the kind words and the explanation. I apologize for having misunderstanding your illustration. Your writing me back and clearing things up is a testimony of your character. I agree with you that as far as the campaign went that Mr. Obama did a great job of attracting people to himself and in the end that attraction won him the election.

So ... we are on the same page on that point. I guess that a 21 month campaign has me a little on edge and a little thin skinned. Please accept my apologies for taking it out on you. I really make my comment in a spirit of help. Thanks again for understanding the rantings of an old conservative.

By the way you can call me Dave! :-) (Diane Hochman is my hero!)

Mr. Wellman,

I greatly appreciate your input into the discussion, but I believe that you are missing the point I am trying to make. I think you should change your percentage to 49% because I am also undecided if Barack Obama has the ability to lead this country to "greatness". I have absolutely no political bias towards Obama/Biden or even McCain/Palin for that matter. My personal choice would have been Joe Schroeder ( just kidding ). But seriously, my point was not that Mr. Obama is a GREAT LEADER in the sense of him running our country. It is more in the way that he has marketed himself to the public masses and was very successful. He used what he LEARNED and spoke to the average everyday human in words they wanted to hear. So does McDonalds, so does WALMART. This caused him to become "ATTRACTIVE" to many, even you cannot deny this because he won. He is African american. They said it could NEVER happen, he proved them wrong. Do I think he will do everything and change our economy as he states? Probably not but does it matter? He used the FORMULA and it worked, thus making him a LEADER in that way. In online and network marketing we need to FOLLOW successful people, or we will be gone by the wayside. Even you, Mr. Wellman, have my utmost respect and admiration because of your experiences in life and business that I have not achieved yet. I appreciate YOU as well and consider you one of my MENTORS. I hope this has cleared up some of the confusion. Thank you for taking the time to read my blog posts.

Jeff,

I agree with you about following great leaders and developing your leadership skills along the way.

I would caution you that on a site like this to be careful about expressing too much of your political bias. 48% of us are yet undecided about President-elect Obama's greatness. He hasn't proven anything yet. (I sat here for ten minutes before adding this comment. It is not meant to offend, but to improve the level of our discussion here. In a free society we all have the right to express ourselves, but like everything these is always a right place and a right time.)

I appreciate you for who you and hope that you will accept this comment in the manner in which it was given.
