Hey gang,
As I ride the wave of my own personal internet marketing learning curve, I see others who have wiped out and are struggling to get back on the board, as well as some who seem to be having the time of their lives as they move skillfully toward the coast. No matter where you are right now, you have probably waded in the same waters as many others who have taken a trial and error approach to marketing online.
I'm sure you have tried or seriously considered:
* Free traffic exchanges scheme that don't work.
* At least one pyramid scheme for .ws domains or some other useless 'commodity' that only cost $5-$10 so you said, "What the heck" and tried it.
* Joining every Web 2.0 site you could find just to get overwhelmed because you had no idea how to keep up with them all, much less leverage any of them properly.
* Squidoo, HubPages, or EzineArticles to market your business only to feel like you're cluttering up the worldwide web with more copy that no one will ever read.
And the list goes on and on...
You may have abandoned these tactics or you may finally be finding your way through the legitimate ones with a determination to discover what works for you. However, no matter where you are now, one thing I know you have done is emulated what you saw being done in those various places, and THAT my friends, is exactly why you can't reach anyone.
You have been so inundated with cookie cutter, whitewashed, unfocused, disingenuous, manufactured marketing messages that now YOU even talk that way when you communicate to your target audience. Now you think in headlines. Even your light banter sounds sales-y. You're turning into a used car salesman as we speak...
SNAP OUT OF IT!
That stuff used to work when no one else was doing it because, well, no one else was doing it! Now that online networkers and shoppers are more savvy to the run-of-the-mill marketing and advertising techniques, they only work a fraction of the time. It's so common that people ignore it. You ignore it. Think about it: when was the last time you actually were coerced into buying something from a fast talking salesman on the internet?
So why would you expect someone else to react positively to that?
Try marketing outside the box - talk to people like they're actually PEOPLE and not marks, tell them what they need to know, ask for what you want, get to the point, and get on with it! It's so simple and crazy that it actually works. You insult people's intelligence when you present old tricks in a new bag. It's time to unlearn all of the marketing speak and just begin communicating real value in real language. Let's talk with people instead of talking at them. Let's act like Jack -
and get out of this marketing box already!
To your continued success,
I.C. Jackson
